Ultimately, there is no way that something cooked up by Ed Miliband, Evan Harris and Oliver Letwin at 3am was ever going to end well. The proposals were rushed and dangerous, the Hacked Off organisation calling for them opaque and sinister.
We might not quite be in a liberal utopia yet, but I think the events of the last few days show that the tide is turning against the authoritarianism we became accustomed to in the New Labour era.
